Johann Kurtz, author of the Becoming Noble substack, relates his experience in Big Tech, and why he believes dissidents underestimate these companies as a launching point for their ambitions.
Working in tech, although not IN the FANG, I worked a lot WITH them, having facebook and google facebook as vendors, I can tell you that outside of the development sphere, employees at big tech are NOT all elite potential.
Meaning, outside of the engineering space, the benefit of working with these companies is limited and I would not see specific benefit, money wise there are also spaces to earn similar salaries. Also, I guess dealing with globohomo is much more intense in the non-technical roles in these companies. That being said, the guest did NOT refer to these roles, but I felt like mentioning it just to put things into perspective.
Admittedly I’m only halfway through the pod but this all sort of feels like the Scott Greet plumber discourse. Are there really that many guys who have the intellect and, more importantly, the ambition that are self selecting themselves out of contention for these roles cuz they fear the woke corporation? Likewise are there world class developers for whom it has never occurred to Work At Google?
No - but I think there are probably some guys who are selecting themselves out because they don't understand what's possible, or how to get from A to B.
That's why I let Johann go into the nitty-gritty of how to make it happen and spent less time on why one ought to consider it.
My take is that the situation is like always a bit of cliche, I've worked for 14 years in a mixture of advertising agency, startups and client side in London, Amsterdam and a bit of Berilin. By the nature of the work (contracting), I could switch places and seen many offices; mostly people working are regular folks who go on on their lives bringing food at the table and paying their mortgages. You will most likely see others cracklying jokes about the mockery of a project who may be describes as 'Woke'. That's the point I realise how of a joke the liberal culture really is and a clue how transient the trend could be.
However, I'm aware that when I've joined the industry I had no diversity and culture war and I tend to sniff that those are the things you need to put up to until you have 4-5 years under the belt of experience and learn to strategically posiotion in the market place. A reccuring theme was always that companies market themselves as woke to get cheaper juniors hired. Those are the kind you dump at the nearest layoff, the gullible that would eat up the "company culture" over a 30% cut on their salary offering mediocre work back. Don't be around those guys!

also, I agree with the notion to extract money from the opponent's system and putting it to work for the cause
